Back in 1871, Mount Vulcan erupted and reshaped Camiguin Island, burying the town of Catarman and submerging its public cemetery beneath the sea. Before Mount Vulcan erupted in 1871, the area where the Sunken Cemetery is located, was a part of the old town of Catarman. It had a regular cemetery right by the coast, used during the Spanish colonial period. What used to be a peaceful burial ground, now submerged under the sea after the eruption, and now all that’s left above water is a giant white cross, which was erected by the local government in 1982 to commemorate the burial site, marking the spot. Today, it is now known as the Sunken Cemetery. Sunken Cemetery Key Features & Activities Historical Significance: Once a known local cemetery but now submerged after the 1871 volcanic eruption. Giant Cross Monument: A large cross marked the site that serves as a visual anchor for tourists, great for photography and sunset shots. Underwater Tombstones: Most of the tombstones are no longer visible due to the overgrown coral frees on the site, creating a unique underwater ecosystem. Snorkeling: Watch the graveyard, coral reefs, and giant clams underwater. Sunset Watching: Chill at the viewpoint and wait for the sun to set and capture a panoramic sunset view, with Mount Vulcan as your background. How to Get to the Sunken Cemetery The Sunken Cemetery is located at Barangay Catarman. It is also 10–20-minute drive from Mambajao. You can park for free near the viewpoint if you are driving a motorcycle. If you’ve booked a day tour, the Sunken Cemetery will also be included in your itinerary so that you don’t have to worry on where to go during your Camiguin trip. Book your Camiguin Day Tour now and experience the Island Born of Fire, one unforgettable stop at a time! Sunken Cemetery Opening Hours & Fees Unlike the White Island and Mantigue Island, Sunken Cemetery does not have a strict opening and closing time since the site is a public coastal. However, if you are planning to snorkel or take a boat to the cross monument, local guides and boatmen are present at the viewpoint as early as 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM. These local guides will offer you a boat ride from the viewpoint to the cross if you decide to take a closer look of the cross monument. Here are the updated prices and fees as of August 2025: Entrance fee: Free Boat ride to the cross monument: ₱100 or $2 Snorkeling rental (optional): ₱150 or $3 You can also ask for a local to guide you where are the best spots to snorkel around the area, for an additional cost. Sunken Cemetery: My Experience We got to the viewpoint around 8 AM and were actually the first ones there. The weather was kind of gloomy, clouds rolling in, looked like rain was on the way which made the giant cross out in the water feel even more eerie. I really wanted to hop on a boat and check out the monument up close, but my girlfriend wasn’t feeling it. She said the whole vibe was too creepy, so we just stayed on shore and took it all in from a distance. Still, it was wild to think that the spot used to be a cemetery over 150 years ago before it got buried by the sea. Seeing that cross out there, knowing what’s underneath, it definitely makes you pause and appreciate the history. Camiguin Island: 3D2N DIY Itinerary Ready for your Camiguin trip? Mantigue Island Opening Hours & Fees The Mantigue Island Departure Area in Barangay Mahinog typically opens as early as 5:30 AM, the same opening time as the White Island Ferry Terminal. The departure area operates until 2:00 PM in the afternoon and it will also be the last boat trip to the island. Although the island itself remains open until 5:30 PM, no boats will depart after 2:00 PM, so it is highly recommended to arrive at the departure area well before the cutoff time to secure your boat ride. If you want to snorkel once you arrive in the island, there are shops around the departure area where you can rent snorkel and bring it to Mantigue Island. Here are the updated prices as of August 2025: Entrance fee: ₱75 or $1.30 per person Environmental fee: ₱30 or $0.50 per person Boat fare (maximum of 6 person): ₱750 or $13. The boat fare is fixed. From Mambajao to the Departure Area and to your boat trip to Mantigue Island, the total travel time would be 50 minutes excluding the waiting time at the departure area as it depends the number of tourists lining up. My Mantigue Island Experience Mantigue Island was such a vibe. The water had all these crazy-clear shades of blue that made it feel like I’d stepped into a wallpaper. I didn’t even have to try hard with the photos. Mount Hibok-Hibok in the background plus those turquoise waters? Instant magic. Every angle looked good, whether I was chilling on the sand or just wandering around. It was one of those places where you don’t need filters, just good lighting and a half-decent camera. The ride from Mambajao was hot and sweaty—motorcycle, then the boat trip, but totally worth it. That moment when you finally step onto the island? Unreal. It’s the kind of experience you just don’t get back in the city. Everything felt raw, peaceful, and kind of perfect. Camiguin Island: 3D2N DIY Itinerary Ready for your Camiguin trip? During our trip, we arrived at the ferry terminal as early as 5:00 AM. White Island is one of Camiguin’s most popular destinations, and to truly appreciate its beauty, it’s best to get there as early as possible. Another reason to visit White Island at sunrise is that the island is completely naked. There’s no natural shade available once the sun is up, which can be uncomfortable for some visitors. The Fascinating History of Camiguin You Need to Discover
A Brief Guide to Camiguin History and Culture Published on August 13, 2025. History of Camiguin Island Camiguin Island’s story dates back to the early 1500s, when Spanish explorers arrived, drawn by its rich natural resources. These explorers named the island after the native Kamigin tree, which was once abundant across the region at the time. After introducing Christianity, they established settlements that have shaped the island’s rich history and culture. Despite this, the island was unfortunately met with devastating natural disasters, which disrupted the island’s growth.A series of volcanic eruptions reshaped the island’s terrain and forced local communities to relocate. This became a powerful symbol of Camiguin’s evolving landscape. Mount Hibok-Hibok Eruption In 1871, Mount Hibok-Hibok erupted violently, destroying the beautiful island of Camiguin. This was Mount Hibok-Hibok’s first major and documented eruption. The blast wiped out the town of Catarman, destroying a nearby church and submerging a local cemetery. This also caused the formation of Mount Vulcan. These key sites, now known as the old church ruins and the sunken cemetery, reflect Camiguin’s rich history and resilient culture. The last known and recorded major eruption of Mount Hibok-Hibok happened on December 4, 1951. This prompted the Philippine government to create the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology or PHIVOLCS. Since its formation, PHIVOLCS has tracked active volcanoes in the country and assessed volcanic risks nationwide. Early warning systems have improved, and disaster readiness has grown stronger, especially in high-risk areas like Camiguin. Camiguin in the Present Times If you ask how big Camiguin Island is, it is currently the second smallest province in the Philippines. It is approximately 92 square miles in size, or 238 square kilometers. The island is located in the Bohol Sea off the northern coast of Mindanao. Today, Camiguin Island is one of the country’s top tourist destinations. Tourists also frequently ask about what Camiguin Island is known for. The island is known for its pristine beaches, like the White Island and Mantigue Island. It also features naturally beautiful waterfalls, such as Tuasan Falls and Katibawasan Falls. The island also celebrates the Lanzones festival, held in October to showcase and highlight Camiguin’s culture and traditions. Camiguin Island has seven volcanoes in total, with Mount Hibok-Hibok as the only active volcano. Due to the island’s volcanic heritage, the locals have embraced their past and proudly call Camiguin the “Island Born of Fire.” About Me Hello and welcome!
